Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that affects how the body processes blood sugar, also known as glucose. Glucose is a primary source of energy for the body, and insulin helps regulate its level in the bloodstream. When the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use it effectively, blood sugar levels rise, leading to diabetes.
There are different types of diabetes, with Type 2 diabetes being the most common. Factors such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, obesity, family history, and age can increase the risk of developing the condition. In many cases, diabetes develops gradually and may go unnoticed for a long time.
Common symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow healing of wounds. However, some individuals may experience mild or no symptoms, making regular blood sugar testing extremely important.
If left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, nerve problems, vision loss, and infections. Early diagnosis allows individuals to manage the condition effectively through lifestyle changes, regular monitoring, and medical treatment when required.
Preventing and managing diabetes involves maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, managing weight, and attending routine medical checkups. With proper care and guidance, people living with diabetes can lead healthy and productive lives.
